What is a Standard Roof Truss?

One of the most commonly used roof trusses thanks to its simple, lightweight and cost-effective nature, the humble standard (or fink) truss is ideal for residential homes, garages, farm buildings and more. Standard, or fink, trusses can often be carried by hand on site thanks to their reduced weight and bulk, negating the need for cranes and other expensive hire equipment. Another advantage includes being able to span greater distances than a cut roof, potentially eliminating the need for internal support walls. They are manufactured using specialist software, cut to millimetre perfect accuracy and delivered just in time for installation, reducing clutter around site. You can either order roof trusses online if your project is reasonably simple, or contact us for a free bespoke quote & design.

What Are The Benefits of Roof Trusses?

🪽Lightweight: Trusses use up to 40% less material than traditional cut roofs, making them significantly lighter yet just as strong.
💷 Cost-effective: Thanks to their rapid installation times and use of fewer materials, trusses are often cheaper than traditional cut roofs.
💪 Strong: Roof Trusses, with their triangular design, are inherently stronger than traditional methods and will span further without supporting walls.
🏡 Versatile: Roof Trusses are available in a huge variety of configurations to suit your project. These can include attic trusses, raised tie trusses, scissor trusses and more.
⚙️ High quality: Trusses are designed in specialist software and made in a purpose-built factory, ensuring millimetre perfect accuracy every time.
🔨 More site space: Rather than having to store vast amounts of timber on site, trusses can be delivered just in time for installation.

Class Leading Manufacturing

We have some of the best toys in the industry. We have invested over £2.5M in our brand new facility and have used almost 20 years of manufacturing experience to ensure it does exactly what we want. It’s the secret to turning your project around in as little as 5 days, no matter what the complexity.

We run two Hundegger saws from Germany. These saws are truly incredible, allowing us to cut the timber for your project at an astonishing pace whilst achieving pin-point accuracy. The saws are fed directly from our design office and will optimise the use of every length of timber for minimal waste.

Once the timber components are cut, they move directly to one of our truss presses. Our skilled assemblers will set out your truss on the press with the assistance of a laser system—again, fed from our design office. The lasers minimise setup time whilst ensuring perfect accuracy every time. Once the truss is set, a jig is formed for multiple runs. Steel nail plates are then pressed into the timbers using 35 tonne presses to complete the roof truss.

The Timber We Use

All of our trusses and joists are made from TR26 timber. TR26 timber is a high-performance, engineered wood that combines exceptional strength and versatility, making it a top choice for demanding structural applications. It’s specifically graded to ensure consistent quality and reliability, with the ability to withstand heavy loads and offer long-lasting durability. TR26 timber is often used in the construction of roof trusses, floor joists, and other key structural elements, where its strength-to-weight ratio and resistance to wear and decay make it a standout choice. Whether in residential or commercial projects, TR26 provides peace of mind and reliability, ensuring a solid, secure foundation for any build.

On top of this, all of our timber is PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) certified, meaning when you purchase trusses or joists from us, you're contributing to the health of the woodland that provides our timber. This includes replanting trees when others are felled, ensuring wildlife is cared for and those working in the woodland are paid fairly.

FAQs

How do I place an order?

Add whatever you need to your basket, add your address (and drawings if you have them), then checkout. We'll ring you to confirm your measurements, send you a design, and confirm a delivery date before taking any funds or manufacturing anything. Once you've received your design and are happy, we'll begin manufacturing.

How does ordering work?

After you've placed your order, we'll give you a ring to confirm your measurements, delivery location, delivery dates/times and any other essential pieces of information before we begin manufacturing your products. This gives you some time to let us know if anything needs changing before it's too late. Once you're fully happy and have given us the go-ahead, we'll begin manufacturing your trusses ready to be delivered for your specified date.

Can I supply more measurements?

Yes—either use the 'order special instructions' box in the basket or send us an email with any specific requirements you may have along with your name and/or order number.

What are your delivery options?

We can deliver trusses, joists or glulam in as little as 5 working days. The price is a flat fee of £150. We will ring you after you've placed your order to confirm which day you'd like us to deliver on using our own fleet of vehicles.

For metalwork, it'll be delivered in 1-3 working days using a courier service and costs £20. If spending more than £150 on metalwork, delivery is free.

Are clips and bracing timber included?

Yes—we'll calculate the correct amount and include these in the price you pay above.

Do I need a structural engineer?

No, you don't need a structural engineer. We will design the roof truss and provide you with the necessary structural calculations for building control.

Are your products treated?

As standard, our products are not treated. Treatment is only necessary if you live in the red marked areas on this map. If you do require treatment, please get in touch.

"We wanted to vault the roof of a building from 1850. The existing roof structure was completely rotten. I contacted Tailor Made Designs with the measurements and they quickly turned around a design, 3D-schematic and quotation (these diagrams were better than anything my structural engineer could produce!). The process of tweaking the design, through to ordering and delivery was very easy and fast. Delivery on site was very straight forward and the trusses has been installed by our joiner without any problems. My company works on conversions of old buildings and I wouldn't hesitate to use Tailor Made Designs for our next project. Thank you." — Rachel Riley

Right some details: quick and helpful responses, we had some changes made without any problems they were quick and helpful, but they were also bothered about the simple little details which made life easier for us. All I can say is if you want a hood product made right and delivered in a timely manner choose Tailor you won't he disappointed." John
