Raised Tie vs Attic Trusses: Two Ways to Increase Space

Two ways to increase space, two very different methodologies! If you're set on increasing the space in your current home or are looking to maximise space in a new build, here are the differences between the two options.

Raised tie trusses: These are focused on raising the height of the ceiling in the room below at the detriment of the attic space. You get tall, characterful ceilings and an airy feeling room, but absolutely no attic space. Maybe use this as a good opportunity to take all those old clothes to a charity shop. They are often cheaper than attic trusses but more expensive than a standard truss thanks to their larger timber sizes. We see them used a lot for garages that'll feature a two car lift, or on extensions that are limited to a specific height but still want a good amount of headroom.

Attic trusses: Attic trusses do the exact opposite. They focus all the attention on the attic (as you may have guessed by their name), providing you with an additional room to use as a bedroom, office, storage space and so on. Attic trusses are the most expensive of all the truss types due to their larger timber sizes, but crucially, this is often offset by the increase in your home's value due to the extra room. While you don't get those nice high ceilings, you do have another floor that can now be used.

Which should you choose? If you're building a new home and have the budget, go for attic trusses. You'll get more for your money in the long run and will appreciate the extra space. If you're constructing an extension, a garage or a particularly nice shed and are a bit restricted in height, go for raised tie trusses.
