Can You Design Your Own Trusses?

The Quick Answer

Yes and no. You can get ideas about the type of truss you'd like (fink, attic, scissor, etc), and use our online shop to get an idea of price, but you can't design a truss structurally and make it yourself.

The Longer Answer

Issue 1, Software: The software that truss manufacturers use is only available to those that have been audited and approved, and as such it's extremely difficult to find alternatives that don't require this.

Issue 2, Safety: When we design your roof, we do so with parameters that are set and approved by the software manufacturer, and have been used by truss manufacturers all over the UK for decades. We take into account the type of tiles you'll be using, whether you're fitting solar panels, the weight you might have in your attic, and any potential snow/wind loads, to make sure that your roof doesn't fall in on you during the night, which is always a bonus.

Issue 3, Building Control: If you did manage to find some free software and design your own truss, there's no guarantee it would provide the necessary calculations to appease building control. Even small domestic roofs need to comply with BS 5268 or Eurocode 5 standards.
